We would like to reflect on our Drowning Prevention Week in June which was run in conjunction with the RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society). Hundreds of information sheets with quizzes and games to reinforce children's learning and age-appropriate safety information was given out throughout the week long campaign. Lots of excited swimmers seemed to enjoy the change in lesson format focussing on the importance of saving themselves or others, should they get into trouble in the water, and appropriate emergency action to take. Some of the focus was on safety at the beach and understanding the meaning of the beach flags. We hope no one had to use these newly acquired skills on their holiday, but that parents felt a little more reassured that their children were aware of the dangers. Although obviously all lessons are improving children’s skills and thereby safety in the water, supporting the RLSS Drowning Prevention Week each year reiterates the potential dangers of the water.
