An intensive crash course during the school holidays can give a child who's almost ready to move up to the next stage in their swimming journey, the push they need to progress. Practising every day without the weekly gap between lessons can help children learn the skills they need to move up to the next stage. Plus you can now book directly online giving you the flexibility and control.
Please read the information below before booking, to ensure you select the correct course. If you are unsure of the correct stage to select or have any other enquiries, please email hsv.swimminglessons@herts.ac.uk
If your child is pre-school age (3.5-4 years old) and a complete newbie to the water, our Ducklings crash course could be the perfect way to introduce them to the water. It promotes increased independence with the emphasis on fun and gaining water confidence to help prepare them for our Ducklings Learn to Swim sessions and Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim Framework. With a guaranteed maximum ratio of four children to one teacher, this course is suitable for toddlers. Parents do not need to accompany the child in the water.

We take advantage of our moveable floor to hold our lessons in 0.7m pool depth, an ideal depth to introduce your younger ones to the water to gain confidence and begin to learn a potentially life saving skill. Our qualified teachers will follow the Swim England Learn to Swim Programme starting with Stage 1. Your child will benefit from a low ratio class with a maximum ratio of four children to one teacher. These lessons are ideal for those who take a fun approach to learning to swim and learning valuable water safety skills.

These low ratio classes should see your child grow in confidence and take leaps forward in their swimming, combining this with essential water safety skills. Suitable for swimmers likely to be on Stage 2 or 3 of the Swim England Pathway and able to swim 5-10m on their front and back. Because of the depth of the water, these classes would be most suitable for under 10 years old.

Children enjoy a mix of stroke improvement, distance swims and water safety. Suitable for swimmers likely to be Stage 4 and above and able to swim 25m with a basic idea of three strokes. Swimmers will be organised into ability lanes and will continue through the Swim England Programme being assessed against their current stage. Those above stage 7 will be introduced to coached swimming sessions.

The coach was excellent with the kids and was extremely patient with them throughout. My child has grown in confidence in the water and enjoys coming every week.

HomePortal is our reporting and progress tool for swimming lessons. This will allow you to track yours or your child’s progress through the staged swimming lessons. Almost in real time, you will be able to track results as we assess. It will also allow you to view how many sessions you have left and move lessons. Remember to register to enable your HomePortal account
Please try to ensure that your child is ready to swim 5 minutes before their swimming lesson, having used the toilet etc, so that the teacher only has to explain the aims of the lesson or activity once, to everybody.
To assist us with the Health and Safety requirements around poolside, we ask that you only arrive for lessons no more than 5 minutes before your lesson is due to start. Once you have dropped your child off to their lesson, please make your way to our swim seating in our balcony or to the café. We have ample space on the balcony and in the café for you to watch your child and it makes things so much easier for the teachers.
To further facilitate this, the teachers will explain during your child’s first lesson of term for each class, where to wait for lessons on poolside once parents/carers have left.
We require all children to wear hats (colour coded by Stage to the colours of the Rainbow). The first hat at each Stage is included in the cost. Replacements are available at a cost of £2.00 each.
If possible, try to get your child to come to lessons without goggles. If they do have to wear goggles for eye-health reasons, please ask the supplier to let you try them on your child first so a correct fit can be found. Goggles should stay in place around the eyes. You can check the fit is correct by pressing them gently to the eye without the straps in place. They should stay there briefly without the straps – this is how you know you have the correct size and shape.
Please be aware that there are other users of our centre and swimming pool alongside our Learn to Swim pupils. All belongings should be locked in one of the available lockers in our changing rooms before moving poolside. The lockers work on a chosen 4 digit pin system – instructions on how to use these can be found in the changing rooms. Using our lockers keeps the changing facilities clear for other users.
If your child is under the age of 8, please collect them from poolside as soon as their lesson is finished. Please arrive to poolside no earlier or later than the finish time as poolside gets busy with the changeover of swimming lessons. You can wait and watch them from the pool balcony seating or in the café.
The car park the Sports Village shares with the University is a controlled ANPR site. If you are here for swimming lessons or other activities you get 2 hours free parking. Please remember to visit one of our kiosks in main Reception on arrival to input your vehicle registration number and record your visit.
If you have booked onto a swim crash course and can no longer attend, we require a minimum of 7 days notice in writing for a full refund. If your request to cancel the course is under 7 days, we will not be able to issue a refund.
Come and have a look around our state of the art facilities at Hertfordshire Sports Village, with the opportunity to try them too.
